The Definition of Woke & Other Words that Matter

The Definition of Woke & Other Words that Matter

The Definition of Woke and Other Words that Matter is a literary and musical investigation, poetic, profane, and profound of the term “woke,” which has efficacy but also has been co-opted, trivialized, and misunderstood. Being woke is many things. It begins with seeing one’s self and demanding others do too. Tonight’s poets/performers (including Jubi Arriola-Headley, F. Douglas Brown, and Morgan Parker) set the record straight.

Tickets $15

Make a TAX-DEDUCTIBLE donation to help cover Jubi's travel costs!

I'm so excited about the 2017 Lambda Literary Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices! Lambda Literary established the Writers Retreat back in 2007. It's the first workshop of its kind ever offered specifically to LGBTQ writers: a one-week intensive immersion in fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and poetry (the track I'll be part of). Lambda Literary says that "the Retreat is an unparalleled opportunity to be mentored by the very best writers in our community," (like me! I hope) "to develop one’s craft, make connections with publishing industry professionals and build a strong community of peers."

I need your help, though.  It'll cost me about $1,800 to attend - in workshop fees, room, and board.  I can cover about $700 of that - can you help with the rest? If you use the link provided to donate to my expenses, your donation will count as a TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATION TO LAMBDA LITERARY. How cool is that???

July's my birthday month - consider it the only gift I'll ever ask you for. (Anyone who donates $50 or more will get a full-name acknowledgement in my first published collection of poems. Promise.) Just click on the link below:

Over 2,000 writers from around the globe have participated in VONA.

VONA now makes its home at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and offers workshops in fiction, poetry, memoir, essay writing, speculative fiction, genre writing, political content in poetry-fiction-prose, LGBTQ narrative, travel writing, playwriting and residencies in prose & poetry. VONA also hosts a free faculty reading, supports alumni events in cities across the country, provides an online forum for literary opportunities and launches community writing programs and events.

Lip Service 35: True Stories Out Loud!

https://www.facebook.com/events/1487160141329264/

Now in its tenth year, Lip Service began as an intimate gathering of storytellers and story lovers and grew into a literary happening that regularly draws more than 500 people to its shows. This is the smartest, hottest, and most honest storytelling event in South Florida: eight people, eight stories, eight minutes each. The stories are hilarious, heartbreaking, poignant, embarrassing, inspiring, and all true! The stories are edited and rehearsed, but you never really know what you’re going to get until you get it. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll cringe. And you are guaranteed to feel inspired to tell your own story. Brought to you by Miami Book Fair.
